When it comes to preventing drug and alcohol abuse, there is no one-fits-all approach. It takes solutions that are based on a community's unique problems and circumstances. Since 1992 Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) has been training local grassroots groups in effective community problem-solving strategies, teaching them how to assess their local substance abuse-related problems and develop a comprehensive plan to address them. Today, CADCA is the nation's leading drug abuse prevention organization, representing the interests of more than 5,000 community anti-drug coalitions in the country.

NAMI's supports education efforts focused on educating America about mental illness, offering resources, and insisting that mental illness become a high national priority. Mental illness is a serious medical illness that affects one in four families.  No one is to blame.  Treatment works, but only half of people living with mental illness receive treatment.

The Mission of the National Council on Problem Gambling is to increase public awareness of pathological gambling, ensure the widespread availability of treatment for problem gamblers and their families, and to encourage research and programs for prevention and education.

The National Crime Prevention Council helps people keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe from crime.  To achieve this, NCPC produces tools that communities can use to learn crime prevention strategies, engages community members, and coordinates with local agencies.

NIAAA provides leadership in the national effort to reduce alcohol-related problems by:

The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) leads national efforts to improve prevention and mental health treatment services for all Americans.  CMHS pursues its mission by helping States improve and increase the quality and range of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for people with mental health problems, their families, and communities.

CSAP works with States and communities to develop comprehensive prevention systems that create healthy communities in which people enjoy a quality life. This includes supportive work and school environments, drug-and crime-free neighborhoods, and positive connections with friends and family. CSAT promotes the quality and availability of community-based substance abuse treatment services for individuals and families who need them.  CSAT works with States and community-based groups to improve and expand existing substance abuse treatment services under the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant Program. C SAT also supports SAMHSA’s free treatment referral service to link people with the community-based substance abuse services they need.

The mission of the Department of Education is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access. It engages in four major types of activities:

Washington State Mentors (WSM) supports quality mentoring programs through comprehensive training and technical assistance Since 2004, WSM has awarded more than 75 grants to direct-service mentoring providers worth $4 million.  WSM has delivered more than 100 training sessions on a variety of topics including best practices in mentoring The number of children with a mentor has grown from 12,000 to 30,000 in the last five years.
