National Prevention Week is a SAMHSA-supported annual health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, substance abuse and mental health issues. This observance is powered by communities nationwide that host prevention-themed events to:

 * Increase the visibility of behavioral health and the benefits of prevention.

 * Provide a forum to educate the public.

 * Create opportunities for networking and collaboration.

This month's Road to Recovery episode discusses the need to understand the culture of specific communities as critical to success in providing recovery services. Overcoming language barriers and appreciating the health-related beliefs and practices held by various diverse communities is becoming increasingly important with the rapidly changing demographics in our Nation. Principles and best practices for effectively reaching targeted communities will be addressed.

Enter Your 2013 Recovery Month Event for the Community Event Award

SAMHSA wants to acknowledge the efforts of those who planned and organized events for Recovery Month in 2013. Enter your 2013 event for the Recovery Month Annual Community Event Award Program.

To be eligible, events must have been posted on the Recovery Month website by December 31, 2013. Previous award winners are not eligible to receive awards in consecutive years. To enter, complete the application form and return it with all required materials by April 18, 2014.
