Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, person-centered form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for change. It is a way of working with people to assist them in accessing their intrinsic motivation to change behaviors that contradict their essential values and interfere with the achievement of their life goals. Motivational Interviewing is both a philosophy and a set of strategic techniques. It is an evidence-based practice with a broad range of applications.

The purpose of this webinar is to increase participants' understanding of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and its relation to Peer Support.  This webinar will help participants better:

1.            Understand the history of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and its application to peer support.

2.            Describe three aspects of the spirit of motivational interviewing, and the importance of person-centered principles in communication.

3.            Identify at least three principles for responding to resistance in a non- confrontational style.

4.            Identify change talk in conversation and provide an empathic summary statement.

5.            Understand the integration of MI in the training of the peer workforce.

6.            Explain peer recovery coach and peer support specialist supervision and its role in your peer worker development.
