Webinar: Treating tobacco dependence in corrections settings

Webinar: Treating tobacco dependence in corrections settings

Tobacco is the psychoactive substance most widely used by prisoners. Whereas a remarkable decline in smoking prevalence rates has been observed in the general population where tobacco control policies are being implemented, no comparable changes have occurred in prisons over the last decades. This creates a need for effective interventions to reduce health risks to both detainees and staff. This webinar will discuss health education and tobacco cessation in the criminal justice system.

This webinar is ideal for behavioral health professionals, tobacco use dependence treatment (TUDT) professionals, tobacco intervention specialists, or any public health professional who is interested in strengthening their knowledge and skills.

Rural Network Orientation

Rural Network Orientation

Greetings from the Rural Network

Rural Network Orientation

Wednesday September 15

Online from 1-1:45 p.m. (approximately)

Learn about the goals and purpose of the statewide Rural Network. Meet staff, connect with other new members, and find out what to expect, what projects we work on, and our network approach to this important equity and prevention work.

What is the Rural Network?

Funded by the Deparment of Health Youth Marijuana Prevention & Education Program, the Rural Network empowers coalitions/communities across Washington to implement prevention strategies and reduce youth marijuana use. We also exist to increase collaboration among often isolated, overworked, and under-served rural professionals. All our meetings are held virtually.

Who can attend?

The Rural Network actively seeks to engage small, rural communities across Washington. We hope to serve communities with less than 10,000 people that are at least one hour driving distance to the nearest urban center. However, we also are made up by people who live in urban-centers but serve rural communities, or anyone who self-identifies as rural regardless of where they are situated.

How To Register

Email preventcoalition@esd112.org to register and receive a meeting invitation to the Rural Network meetings, or the upcoming New Member Orientation.

Webinar: Integrating suicide prevention into the SBIRT model

Webinar: Integrating suicide prevention into the SBIRT model

Description: This summer - in the wake of two celebrity suicides and the release of the CDC report highlighting an alarming rise in the US suicide rate - the public's attention was drawn to the significant public health problem of suicide. Because alcohol and drug use greatly increases suicide risk, it is critical to integrate suicide prevention into substance use early intervention and treatment. This webinar describes suicide as a public health problem and explains how suicide screening and intervention can be integrated into the SBIRT model.

Presented by: Brett Harris, DrPH, is the Director of Public Health Initiatives at the Suicide Prevention Office of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). In this role, Dr. Harris works with large health systems and community providers to integrate suicide safer care into multiple service settings including inpatient and outpatient mental health, emergency departments, substance use disorder treatment, and primary care. Dr. Harris is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University at Albany School of Public Health where she is designing a course in suicide prevention and collaborating on alcohol and drug prevention and early intervention projects. Prior to joining OMH and the University at Albany, Dr. Harris developed, implemented, and evaluated alcohol and drug Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) projects with the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). Dr. Harris received her Doctor and Master of Public Health from the University at Albany and her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University.

Mentoring Youth Impacted by the Opioid Crisis

Mentoring Youth Impacted by the Opioid Crisis

While we are still learning about the wide and deep impacts of the pandemic, increased isolation, and major changes in how we all operate in school, at home, and in community; we know that the opioid crisis continues to affect youth and their families across the country.

In addition, substance use, misuse, and addiction of any kind are specific experiences that affect many of the young people we work with. In this webinar, we'll look at the ways in which substance use is often a trauma response for young people; as well as trauma producing when it's a challenge for youths' families and loved ones.

The webinar will start with a presentation by Elizabeth Joy, MBA, MSW, LISW-S, LCDCIII, BCC; and a moderated panel discussion with two organizations integrating understanding of this issue into their mentoring models: Brian Maus from Eluna and Gene Bowen from Road Recovery.

Webinar: Moving from Trauma-Informed to Healing-Centered Care in Tribal Communities

Speaker: Gary Ferguson, ND

Dr. Gary Ferguson is the Director of Outreach & Engagement at the Institute for Research and Education to Advance Community Health at WSU. Formally trained as a Naturopathic Physician, he is passionate about promoting healthy communities using a population health approach. His past positions include providing clinical services to his home region at Eastern Aleutian Tribes.

Description: Many of us are familiar with trauma-informed approaches and strive to have systems of care that reflect this understanding. The next evolution in trauma-informed care is to create a more approach that is healing-centered; incorporating culture, spirituality, and a focus on well-being.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the concept of Trauma-Informed and the principles underlying this best practice.
  2. Expand understanding of moving beyond trauma-informed to being trauma-responsive using the concepts of cultural humility.
  3. Experience examples of care coordination that involves seeing through a trauma-informed and healing-centered lens.

Webinar: Through rose-colored glasses: When cultural competency isn't enough

Webinar: Through rose-colored glasses: When cultural competency isn't enough

The story we hold as true impacts the way we interact in the world. In an increasingly diverse American landscape, counselors are challenged to understand the needs of clients often without having a foundation of cultural humility necessary to create alliances and build trust. This workshop will prompt participants to explore their own stories and the underlying biases that unintentionally hinder both personal and professional relationships. Workshop participants will begin to examine subtle generalizations about race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, and other differences, including addiction identification and weight biases. Together, we will learn to appreciate our personal stories and model self-reflection for clients who are just beginning to understand their own.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to define cultural competence and cultural humility and contrast the two models.
  • Participants will be able to identify five characteristics or beliefs that shape their personal identity.
  • Participants will be able to describe the relationship between cultural humility and therapeutic alliances in the counseling dynamic.
