Project Coordinator, Mercer Island Healthy Youth Initiative - City of Mercer Island

This position is responsible for providing support staffing to the Mercer Island Partnership For Success (PFS) grant and the Healthy Youth Initiative (HYI) Coalition, facilitating the coordination and implementation of the project directly and/or in conjunction or consultation with the Coalition Executive Committee and/or HYI Project Director, other staff and volunteers. The HYI is funded by the SAMHSA STOP Act grant to prevent underage alcohol use and the SAMHSA Partnership for Success, Strategic Prevention Framework grant that addresses substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion. This is a .8 FTE to 1.0 FTE, 5-year position.


Essential Job Functions

  • Provide staff support to the Mercer Island Healthy Youth Initiative.
  • Facilitate the coordination and implementation of Coalition-designed Action and Strategic Plans for the coalition as a whole directly and/or in conjunction or consultation with HYI Coalition Executive Committee board members, Coalition partners and/or other staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinate efforts with HYI Project Director including action and strategic planning and implementation of the strategic plan including all aspects of the Strategic Prevention Framework and specific efforts including positive community norms marketing, social marketing, policy work and advocacy.
  • Coordinate community and school-based curriculum implementation and Coalition public events such as Town Hall Meetings.
  • Speak in public venues as a representative of HYI and the City of Mercer Island’s Youth and Family Services Department.
  • Maintain project documentation and complete reports and documentation as required including Federal reporting.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and professional/ethical standards required by State and Federal statutes and by those standards generally accepted for counseling, social work, chemical dependency and/or certified prevention professional practice.
  • Attend evening meetings and occasional weekend meetings or activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

This position is supervised by the City of Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Community Development and Administrative Manager. Supervisory support and assistance will be available on a regular basis and also as needed to meet project demands.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in social work, psychology, sociology, prevention or related field.
  • Successful experience in project coordination and human services project management.
  • Experience in substance abuse prevention; experience with environmental prevention strategies preferred.
  • Experience implementing SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, community groups and volunteers.
  • Experience providing staffing support to boards, coalitions and/or other groups.
  • Experience working on research-oriented tasks and projects.
  • Experience writing project proposals, reports and press materials.
  • Experience or knowledge of social marketing and social norms marketing.
  • Public speaking experience in a community setting.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and excellent inter-personal communications skills.
  • Ability to be both a community coalition leader and a collegial team player.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work under pressure.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills.
