General Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Prevention and Youth Services Manager or Director, the Student Assistance Professional develops and delivers services to students facing behavioral health issues in collaboration with school assistance programs, parents, and community agencies.

Assignment/Location:
This position will provide services to the Washougal School District and will work a full-time schedule at 40 hours per week, 185 days per year.

Essential Functions/Other Functions

Essential Functions:

  1. Recruit, enroll, screen, and provide support to youth identified as needing student assistance services.
  2. Participate as an integral member of the student assistance, core, or other multi-disciplinary teams.
  3. Coordinate activities with the school based team to identify high risk students and refer them to school and community-based services.  Develop and communicate student referral process for school staff.
  4. Provide individual/family support services within the student assistance framework.
  5. Prepare and complete program record keeping forms, including intake, services, and evaluations.
  6. Provide crisis intervention.
  7. Attend monthly training meetings at Educational Service District 112.
Assigned to Prevention and Intervention Specialist Role:
  1. Provide pre-assessment and referral information to students and/or parents who are affected by alcohol/drug use.
  2. Facilitate school-based support services.
  3. Conduct early intervention/insight programs for students experimenting with alcohol/drug/tobacco use or suspended for alcohol/drug/tobacco use.
  4. Provide alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention/awareness programs (e.g. Washington Drug Free week, prevention education series, etc.) to staff, students and/or parents.
  5. Provide staff inservice training pertaining to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.  Also provide training in the areas of prevention, intervention, recovery and student assistance programming.
  6. Facilitate alcohol, tobacco, drug prevention and intervention, and concerned others (children of substance users) support/education groups as needed.
Other Functions:

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & Skills

Minimum Qualifications:
Must meet one of the following:

  1. Bachelor's degree OR a High School diploma or GED and four years of experience working with students facing behavioral health issues; OR
  2. WA State licensed Psychologist as defined under RCW 18.83; OR
  3. Qualified Alcohol/Drug Counselor meets WA State DBHR (Dept. of Behavioral Health and Recovery) requirements; OR
  4. An educational staff associate certification as a school counselor, school psychologist, school nurse or school social worker under Washington professional educator standards board rules adopted pursuant to RCW 28A.410.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Master's degree in education, human development, sociology, or psychology.
  2. Experience in school based student assistance programs.
  3. Hold or eligible to hold a Certified Prevention Professional (CPP) or Chemical Dependency Professional (CDP) certification. Individual assignment may require candidate to pursue certification.

 

Working Conditions/Employment Requirements

Working Conditions:

  1. Extended or flexible hours as necessary.
  2. Travel to school districts and institutions within the Prevention Program service region.
Employment Requirements:
  1. Successful completion of a criminal history and fingerprint check through Washington State Patrol and FBI.
