Webinar: Connecting with youth in a time of physical disconnection

How do we apply the Science of the Positive in times of uncertainty? What does positive messaging look like during a global pandemic? Can we apply Positive Community Norms to messaging about COVID19? How can we continue messaging about anything else?

This team-led series of five virtual workshops will address these questions and show how the Science of the Positive can be a touchstone and a guide for public health practitioners during difficult and confusing times. No previous experience is necessary, but we recommend that newcomers also register for the Introduction to Positive Community Norms.

Schools are closed for the foreseeable future. How can we test our messages without contact with youth? Where can we reach them with our messages? In this workshop, we will discuss alternative ways to pilot-test and deliver messages via social media and more.

Webinar: Using GONA principles to implement the SPF in Native and Indigenous communities

Webinar: Using GONA principles to implement the SPF in Native and Indigenous communities

This webinar will provide an overview of a training designed for Tribal communities to strengthen their ability to engage and sustain community stakeholder participation in the implementation of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) using Gathering of Native Americans (GONA) principles at the tribal/village level. This training was developed to build the capacity of tribal prevention advocates who have little or no experience with the SPF and have voiced their need for more culturally appropriate strategies for SPF implementation. This effort strives to make the connection between GONA and the SPF and to ensure that the content is reflective of the core principle “Culture is Prevention” as evidenced by the focus on how traditional native culture sustainability strategies organically include the 5 steps of the SPF, while adhering to the core teachings of the GONA. The training uses the GONA curriculum as a lens to review the essential elements of the SPF: its benefits, its effectiveness, and especially, its cultural relevance. This webinar will take participants through the training itself, including the four phases of the GONA, while simultaneously introducing the appropriate step of the SPF that aligns with each phase.

The last 15 minutes of this webinar will be dedicated to open discussion and Q&A with the presenter about accessing this training in the future

Webinar: Community conversations: Reimagining gangs and gang members

The College of Social Work & Criminal Justice of the Florida Atlantic University® and the National Hispanic & Latino Mental Health Technology Transfer Center will be hosting a free webinar about the intersection of social work and criminal justice aimed to reduce youth gang involvement.

The word "gangs" often connotes images of tough guys, drive-bys, and face tattoos, but these connotations don't even begin to cut it. During our next "Community Conversation: Illuminating Discussions at the Intersection of Social Work and Criminal Justice", we will discuss why it's high time that we begin rethinking gangs and gang members. Our expert panelists include J Rocky Romero, Ph.D., LMSW, trainer, and consultant for the National Hispanic and Latino Mental Health Technology Transfer Center; and Gabriel T Cesar, Ph.D., assistant professor in the FAU School of Criminology and Criminal Justice who teaches on criminological theory, criminal justice, and gangs with a research emphasis on social control, violence, and youth development.

Learning objectives:

1. Identify risk factors of youth gang involvement.

2. Discuss successful re-entry, prevention and intervention techniques.

3. Discuss specific strategies to reduce youth gang involvement.

Webinar: Discussing options and referring adolescents to treatment

Webinar: Discussing options and referring adolescents to treatment

Description: One of the largest barriers to providing appropriate substance use services to adolescents is getting them to open up about their use and engage in conversation to reduce or eliminate it, if necessary. The Using SBIRT to Talk to Adolescents about Substance Use four-part webinar series introduces health professionals to the SBIRT model as a way to learn from adolescents about their substance use, talk about what might motivate them to make a decision to reduce or abstain (if needed), and execute a plan to do so.

This fourth webinar in the series outlines how health professionals can connect adolescents who screen at risk for substance use to appropriate treatment. This webinar will demystify the referral to treatment process, providing sample dialogues and tips to facilitate effective linkages and follow-ups. The presenter will also review unique challenges that a health professional might encounter when referring adolescents to treatment, such as confidentiality and push back.

Along with cutting-edge, evidence-based education, the expert presenters will provide sample scripts and role plays so participants gain strategies to use right away with adolescents in many settings. This free education is ideal for anyone who wishes to gain an in-depth understanding of SBIRT and its use with adolescents, designed for both those who are new to SBIRT and for those who want more advanced training beyond an overview.

Learning Objectives: As a result of participating in this webinar, you will:

  • Learn how to provide referrals and facilitate linkages to treatment for adolescents who screen at risk.
  • Understand the importance of follow-up and what to cover during these encounters.

Webinar: Integrating grief and loss conversations into the SBIRT model

Webinar: Integrating grief and loss conversations into the SBIRT model

According to the Dougy Center: The National Center for Grieving Children and Families, individuals cope with losses in different ways; therefore, there is no right or wrong way to grieve. In adolescents and young adults, feelings of loss and grief can develop from many things beyond a loved one's physical death, such as loss of developmental experiences or milestones. This webinar will explore the various definitions and components of grief and loss and how it can manifest in adolescents and young adults. Using the SBIRT model, participants will learn to identify warning signs and screen for complicated grief in adolescents and young adults, conduct a brief intervention, and link them to appropriate resources for further treatment, including substance use and depression. The presenter will also outline protective and mitigating factors to help adolescents and young adults cope with grief and loss.

Webinar: The development of culturally grounded, trauma-informed prevention programs in Indigenous communities

Webinar: The development of culturally grounded, trauma-informed prevention programs in Indigenous communities

DESCRIPTION
Prevention of the behavioral health inequities faced by many Indigenous communities can be strengthened by centering Indigenous ways of knowing in the development and adaptation of prevention programs designed to mitigate the impact of intergenerational trauma on health. This webinar will provide insight into the importance of culturally-based, trauma-informed early intervention for families, an introduction to a culturally grounded prevention program developed within one tribal community, and an opportunity to reflect on how a decolonizing approach can be applied to prevention science in Indian country.

OBJECTIVES
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss how revitalization of tribal traditional practices/beliefs serves as a conduit for healing trauma in the family and serves as prevention and intervention for mental health problems and substance (mis)use within the family.

2. Describe the development of the stim̓ aspuʔús program, a culturally grounded trauma-informed preventive intervention.

3. Explore the tensions involved in culturally grounded prevention research and the role of (de)colonization in this work.
